Spring is blooming – is your car ready inside and out?

Whether the lockdown continues until the end of May, or whether Illinois is open for business, to a further extent, before that, you now have time to wash the salt of another winter away. Carwashes are still, generally, open for business, at least in locations where you get your gasoline. You can maintain social distancing while driving/riding through the carwash. That salt is corrosive to the finish, undercarriage and parts of your car. Washing it away is a good thing, especially when you have the rest of spring, all of summer, and part of next fall before you should have to worry about municipalities, townships, counties or the state putting more salt on the road. However, since you may have some extra time on your hands, maybe you’d like to wash the car yourself in the driveway. You can do so while maintaining appropriate distance from other people. In the meantime, you have a reason to be outdoors on some of the nicer days we’re expecting this week. According to the weather r...

Your car, truck or SUV is essential, even during COVID-19 shutdown

Most of us aren’t driving nearly as much as we did before the coronavirus pandemic resulted in a virtual shutdown of the American economy – of the World economy. Living in McHenry County, your car, truck or SUV is an essential part of your life. It’s not like in Chicago where some people don’t even own cars – they walk or rely on public transportation. With the governor’s ‘shelter-in-place’ order, it may seem that our vehicles are less essential than before. But is this really the case? Most of us still rely on our cars, trucks or SUVs to run out for groceries. We might be able to have the food delivered but this isn’t always practical. Besides, in spite of the additional risk, we may look upon a trip to the grocery store as a welcome diversion from the isolation of our own homes. We may find the same relief when running out to pick-up dinner from curbside at one of the restaurants open and providing such service in town. For most of us, it’s not practical to walk. We have to dr...

Post-winter check of steering, suspension and alignment of your car, truck or SUV still timely, even with COVID-19

With the passing of winter, maintenance of your car, truck or SUV customarily includes having the steering and suspension, as well as the alignment, checked. This is the case whether spring comes about under the dark cloud of a pandemic or not. The problem for many is that they’re distracted from the maintenance they would ordinarily have performed on their vehicles by the current state of affairs. And if they are judicious enough to remember the need to have the steering, suspension and alignment checked, they may feel frustrated by the simultaneous need to ‘shelter in place.’ Fortunately, many auto repair shops are offering a solution. For instance, Performance Unlimited, in Ringwood, will have a technician come out to the car, truck or SUV owner’s home and pick up the vehicle, driving it back to the shop for service. When the service is done, the technician will drive it back to the home of its owner. To and from, as well as during service, all the auto repair technicians who ...

Steps to keep yourself safe from coronavirus

You’ve probably heard most of this. But, from time to time, additional information has dripped out about other steps you should take to keep yourself safe from the coronavirus pandemic. Our thought was to put these in one concise place for you to quickly review: Avoid unnecessary public exposure:  We’re all fairly familiar with this by now. However, with winter’s grip on cabin fever continued by the coronavirus beyond what might have been its normal end, the temptation to venture out may feel strong. Stick to it a little longer and you may keep yourself and other loved ones safe while contributing to the war on COVID-19. Maintain a safe distance from others:  Social distancing means that you’ll do all you can to avoid the possibility that a cough, a sneeze or simply the breathing or talking of another person could spread the virus to you through the air. Wear a face mask when out in public:  If you can find a facemask for sale, it’s a good purchase at this time. If no...
