At this point, if you haven’t winterized your car, time is definitely running short. In fact, McHenry area weather has already thrown some serious tests you and your car’s way. Where we usually don’t see more than a few flakes of snow through mid-November, this year we had children Trick-or-Treating in a snowstorm.

Equally unusual, where we only dip slightly below the freezing mark in the same period, we saw temperatures that were far colder than we’re used to here in the McHenry area. Not only did we see days in the teens, on a couple occasions, the temperature dipped into the single digits. One of the

worst of these days was Nov. 12 when the high only reached 16 degrees and the mercury fell to a low of 6 degrees.

The weather warmed up a little after that but there’s a lot of winter left to go. If your car surpassed that early test, there are other tests yet to come. In January and February, temperatures in the single digits could refer to highs as sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon. If there is a weakness in your winterizing of your vehicle, January and February may unearth it.

Blocks of ice falling from cars in McHenry could cause accidents or damage

We’ve all seen those blocks of snow falling from behind the rear tires of a car when the snow rolls into McHenry . Fortunately, they’re just packed snow that will disintegrate under your vehicle’s tires as you simply drive right through them, right? Don’t count on it. Those blocks of snow are often packed so tight, condensed by the thaw-and-freeze cycle, that they’re anything but oversized snowballs . They’re often more like boulders. Hit one of those blocks and the collision between the block and one of your tires could send you careening off the road or into oncoming traffic. Get out to McHenry Music Festival for a good time and music near to home

Some folks here in McHenry will load up the car and head out to Red Rock Amphitheater near Denver to see a show. Some will go to the MSG Sphere near Las Vegas. Some will go to the Bonaroo Festival Concert to see a show. That’s quite a bit of driving and you’d better make sure your vehicle is up to the trip.
