Performance Unlimited's Denny Norton steps out for a good time and a good cause: Shop With A Cop party Nov. 21 at 31 North

Most people know Denny Norton as the owner of Performance Unlimited in Ringwood. They’re used to seeing him behind the counter responding to questions about their cars. They’ll see Norton interacting with the mechanics in the shop as they team up to ensure that cars are repaired and maintained to the highest possible standards. This Thursday, however, folks will see Norton in a different setting.

Norton is also vice president of MC3, a McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce marketing connection group. It’s in that capacity he’ll be found at 31 North Banquet & Conference Center from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21. Instead of operating one of the premier auto repair shops in Northern Illinois, Norton will be having a good time for a good cause at the 7th Annual Shop With A Cop party and fundraiser.

“This is a great party and a great event,” said Norton. “We’ve got just a boatload of raffle and auction items. We’ve got food, a cash bar and live music.”

The live music includes a singoff between the McHenry High School Madrigal Choir and the Johnsburg High School Madrigal Choir. Not only are the singers wildly talented, they pull out all the stops by showing up in 1800s garb that fit the occasion.

Shop With A Cop raises funds for McHenry County Police Charities. The police use the funds to take deserving children out for holiday shopping. After shopping, the officers and children come back to 31 North for breakfast while MC3 members, and other volunteers, wrap the gifts.

The support for the event has grown year after year. This year, there are at least 137 sponsors for the party. That list includes:

Blocks of ice falling from cars in McHenry could cause accidents or damage

We’ve all seen those blocks of snow falling from behind the rear tires of a car when the snow rolls into McHenry . Fortunately, they’re just packed snow that will disintegrate under your vehicle’s tires as you simply drive right through them, right? Don’t count on it. Those blocks of snow are often packed so tight, condensed by the thaw-and-freeze cycle, that they’re anything but oversized snowballs . They’re often more like boulders.  Hit one of those blocks and the collision between the block and one of your tires could send you careening off the road or into oncoming traffic. In some cases, they’re so solid you could pound them with a sledgehammer with little effect. They truly can represent a serious road hazard. Get out to McHenry Music Festival for a good time and music near to home

Some folks here in McHenry will load up the car and head out to Red Rock Amphitheater near Denver to see a show. Some will go to the MSG Sphere near Las Vegas. Some will go to the Bonaroo Festival Concert to see a show. That’s quite a bit of driving and you’d better make sure your vehicle is up to the trip. What happens, however, if something goes wrong – if your vehicle breaks down while driving there or back? What happens if the show is canceled, as happened this year with the Bonaroo Festival?
