Don’t make your car beg to clean away the detritus of another Richmond winter

We can be pretty sure winter is leaving Richmond behind now. Time for a carwash to clean the dirt off your vehicle. And there are good reasons to do so. This wasn’t the coldest or snowiest winter we’ve ever seen in Richmond, but it still got cold, and it still snowed. We still had snowplows on the road spreading salt behind them. The result, of course, tends to show up on your car. The car that you’re used to parking in your Richmond driveway has a shiny finish, doesn’t it? But how does it look now? If you haven’t washed it in a while, the recently passed winter has covered that shiny finish with a gray film that almost makes your hands feel dry simply to look at. Much of that gray haze is the product of road salt kicked up by the tires of yours and other people’s cars as they drive down the highway. But it’s not just salt. The haze is also made up of road dirt, oils, and various chemicals. One thing you can be sure of is that none of it is good for the finish of your car. During the s...

Wonder Lake winter has passed – time to replace snow tires and rotate tires

Wonder Lake winter has passed. Time to have your tires rotated. No, it’s still possible that Wonder Lake will experience a snowstorm. Of course, we might spot a great white shark out in the middle of the lake, too. No, by this time of year, even with the screwy weather we’ve seen the last few years, it’s safe to say that we probably won’t see any more snow, on the east side or west side of Wonder Lake until winter returns late this year. Most of us are happy to hear that, though we’ll have to make exceptions for the snow mobilers and ice fishers among us. Hopefully, they had some opportunities to enjoy their endeavors but it’s now late April; enough already. Bring on the warm weather and springtime. As long as we’ve accepted the idea that the winter of 2023-24 is behind us, maybe we should accept the idea that it’s time to remove those snow tires, if you do have snow tires on your vehicle.  Snow tires are a great way to go through the snow in these parts. They grip the roads in win...

McHenry offers multiple opportunities for escaping cabin fever

For the most part, the weather is cooperating with those who want to escape cabin fever. Good thing there's plenty to do in McHenry. Even mild McHenry winters cause the spread of that annual virus – Spring Fever. No doubt, you’ve spent more time indoors, cooped up and virtually locked up as though you’re a prisoner serving time until the warden – winter – is replaced by spring time. Come the spring time, these warm days engender an overwhelming desire to throw open the windows as we break out of our cells. It’s a pleasure just to stand outside, especially when we can stand outside without bulky winter clothing – coats, hats, gloves and layers. But maybe you’d like to do something more than simply stand outside enjoying the lifegiving warmth of the sun. What then should you do? No doubt, you’ve had several months to consider the options. On the other hand, your new-found freedom may leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed by the possibilities.  You can talk a walk on the Riverwalk, ride...

Time of year in Johnsburg to have your steering, suspension and alignment checked

This is a general schematic of what the steering and suspension parts of your Johnsburg vehicle look like. There are quite a few parts and they're all susceptible to damage. If you’re steering and suspension are in properly aligned and in good shape, as you drive down a straight road here in Johnsburg, your car, truck or SUV should not pull to one side or the other. If you do feel the vehicle trying to pull to the right or left, there’s definitely something out of whack.  Of course, even if it goes straight, you could have problems with the steering and suspension somewhere. But the test above is a basic place to start checking on the status of your steering and suspension, whether your driving in Johnsburg or anywhere else. This is a good time to start thinking about the status of your suspension and steering. We are, hopefully, emerging from another winter. And winters in this area are traditionally rough on cars, trucks and SUVs. When it comes to winters giving your vehicle are ...
