Are you ready to take your McHenry 4X4 offroad?


That Jeep of yours looks super cool driving down Elm Street in McHenry. But those high-stepping looks aren’t merely for aesthetic purposes; you drive that buggy because it’s made to go off road and that’s what really gets your adrenaline pumping.

People from McHenry who haven’t been there just can’t relate to the thrill of scooting around rocks on a backwoods trail. They’ve never experienced jumping hills with all-four wheels going airborne. They can’t imagine traversing creek beds while making a wake with your 4X4.

As for your ride, that Jeep, Ford F-150, Dodge RAM, Chevy ZR2 or whatever you’re driving, you want to make sure that it’s in optimal condition before you head off the road and into the wild. Fail to adequately care for your vehicle and you may drive off road but you’ll need a tow to get back out.

Tires: You want the right tires for the offroad experience that awaits you. For starters, you want some tires that will work with your suspension to provide adequate ground clearance. You don’t want to get hung-up on the first rock you try to pass over.

You also want tires that are in good shape and made for the terrain you’ll see out there. Whether it’s All-Terrain, Mudders, Snow or Rock & Stone – you want tires made for the ground you’ll conquer. 

Engine: You want a reliable powerhouse with the horses to climb the mountain of your dreams. You want to maintain that baby so that it won’t crack under pressure.

Suspension: You want the right Lift Kit, properly installed, so that you’ve got the ground clearance to pass over the most hazardous terrain. You want suspension parts that are solid – that won’t snap at inopportune moments.

Transmission: You want a trannie that is well maintained and rock solid. Nothing will test a transmission the way off-roading will. If it’s not up to snuff, you’re liable to find out when you’re in the middle of your latest offroad adventure.

Lighting: When the sun goes down, or the clouds and rain roll in, you may find it difficult to negotiate the trails out there. You want good lighting so you can see in tight spots. You don’t want to try feeling your way through a dark terrain.

Proper Tools: Do you have a working jack and spare in your vehicle? Do you have a shovel, an axe, wrenches, hammer, jumper cables and a fire extinguisher. How ‘bout tow ropes. You may need to get pulled out of a tight spot. Or, you may need to pull someone else out.

Taking your 4X4 offroad from the McHenry highways is a thrill you don’t want to miss. But only an amateur would head out there without properly preparing. Make sure you and your ride are ready for the experience.
