What will you do if you get stuck in the snow called for McHenry this week?

It was a nice weekend but now the weatherman is predicting that we could get a substantial snowfall here in McHenry this week. When the snow gets heavy, there is always the risk that your car will get stuck in the snow. If you don’t know how to get out of the snow when stuck you’re as stranded as if the car won’t start at all. But if you know how to react when you get stuck in the snow, the problem is seldom insurmountable. The first thing to remember is to keep your head. We’ve all seen that person who is stuck and is sitting with the tires spinning rapidly but not moving at all. They’re wasting their time and their gasoline. There are techniques for getting out of the snow when your car is stuck. And if the weatherman is right about the snow expected for McHenry this week, you may have reason to try out these techniques. It’s not so bad as long as you know what to do. Steps to remember when your car is stuck in the snow: Clear a path for the tires. It’s a good idea to ke...

Are your car doors frozen shut? What can you do about it with a McHenry County winter?

Maybe Mother Nature doesn’t want you to go today. Maybe that’s what the car doors are frozen shut. Car thieves would need a torch or a chisel to get into your car. Considering, what are you going to do, assuming you’re not going to allow Mother Nature the last word on the subject? Here in McHenry County, winters get cold – some colder than others. This year hasn’t been too bad … so far. But winter isn’t over yet. Remember last year? No one told us in December of 2018 that we would get hit with a Polar Vortex and dramatically sub-zero temperatures. Likewise, there’s no guarantee that we won’t get another Polar Vortex this year, too. The temperature, however, doesn’t have to be 30-below for your car doors to freeze shut; sometimes, you’ll have that problem when it’s only marginally below freezing. Here in the McHenry County area, we can have rain that, as the temperature falls, will freeze solid as a rock. The streets turn into skating rinks. The trees are laced with frozen water. ...

Have you figured out what to get your significant other for Valentine’s Day?

How about some TLC for the car, truck or SUV? Candy! Flowers! These are the staples of Valentine’s Day giving. But you don’t have to stay in that rut. You can surprise them – give them a gift they’d never expect. For instance, you could preen and pamper their car, truck or SUV. Talk about a gift they’ll appreciate long after the holiday has passed … They depend on that vehicle. Safety, dependability and comfort are the keywords to a quality automotive experience. And you can help keep them in their car, truck or SUV in the pink. So, what kind of vehicle pampering could you give? Here are some ideas: Have their car, truck or SUV detailed. Having someone clean their vehicle, inside and out, leaving it spic-and-span, with a new car smell and scent is a wonderful way to say, “I love you.” Detailers will eliminate that sticky stuff from the steering wheel and the ground-in dirt on the seats and carpet. They’ll bring back the luster to the car, truck or SUV’s finish that your signif...

Keep after your car’s maintenance whichever groundhog you choose to believe

It all depends on which groundhog you choose to believe; will we have six more weeks of winter or an early spring. If you follow the prognostications of the groundhog in the actual Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, you received some good news Sunday – Groundhog Day: their groundhog did not see his shadow and we, or they, can expect an early spring. If, however, you rely on the local Woodstock Willie groundhog, the news was not so good: six-more weeks of winter. He saw his shadow or that’s what the translator of groundhogese tells us. Of course, we can hope that the local groundhog translator didn’t hear the groundhog right. We might even conclude that the groundhog doesn’t know what he or she is talking about, whatever language they use. For the sake of argument, let’s assume that Woodstock Willie knows what he’s talking about. In other words, let’s assume, as painful as it is to contemplate, that we will have six-more weeks of winter. Hopefully, your car has handled the snow and cold ...
