Do I need new shocks or struts?

If your car could talk, after this recent McHenry winter, this is what it might say: “Oh, my aching shocks and struts. You try running through pothole after pothole and see how it feels.” Of course, in a way, your car may be speaking to you anyhow. Only, instead of “Oh, my aching shocks and struts,” it may something that sounds more like “Squeak, squeak” as it goes down the road. At the same time, it may communicate with you using a little body language. For your car, body language may come across as a rocking up and down motion when going over bumps. It may also come across as a jarring jolt when hitting a pothole. The sad truth is that winter is not kind to your car’s shocks and struts. In fact, a McHenry winter is downright abusive for your shocks and struts. Your shocks and struts have a right to feel abused. What does it mean for your car if the shocks and struts are worn? From your immediate perspective, it will probably come across as a rougher ride when driving. But, yo...

McHenry’s Green Street Cruise Night fast approaching

Another summer of Green Street Cruise Nights is about to begin in downtown McHenry. Check out the calendar of events below and come join the fun on Monday nights. Classic cars, pony cars, hotrods new and old: they’re coming to McHenry Monday nights, just as they do each year, with the advent of Green Street Cruise Night. That time is almost upon us again – Cruise Night starts in McHenry at 6 p.m., Monday, May 23. Green Street Cruise Night is a place where local car enthusiasts can showcase their fine automobiles for the pleasure of the viewing public. Some of these cars have undergone hours and hours of restoration, often at considerable expense. Others didn’t require restoration; they were cared for like fine works of art, covered and kept in humidity controlled garages. Where else could you come Monday nights to find the car you dreamt about in your youth in virtually new condition. There it is, decades later, and looking as though it was just driven off the showroom. Cars...

The car’s AC isn’t broken – it’s just lost a little of its mojo

Linda got in the car with her friend and started the engine. Immediately, she turned the car’s AC onto ‘MAX’ and then started driving. She and Melissa both commented on “what a nice, sunny day it is.” “It has to be in the upper 70s already,” said Melissa. “I think you’re right,” said Donna with a frown on her face. “What’s wrong?” asked Melissa. Donna held her hand in front of the vent to feel the air blowing out. “For crying out loud,” she said. “I checked the AC the other day and it was blowing nice and cold. Now, it feels like it’s not working at all.” Linda rolled her window down and suggested Melissa do the same. “I’ll have to bring the car in to have the AC fixed,” she said. “It certainly is temperamental.” Actually, Linda’s air conditioning might not be as temperamental as she might think. It may have simply lost a little of its mojo. The other day when Linda checked out the air conditioning, it was in the 60s outside. The car’s AC didn’t have to work all that har...
